AWS Open Source Documentation Accessibility

Before launching Write-Brained full-time, Melissa Vagi worked for four years at Amazon Web Services. During her time there, she led the creation of documentation that complied with Section 508 and WCAG standards for the Public Sector group and the OpenSearch application. Her efforts reached millions of global developers who rely on assistive technology.

Project Overview

As Senior Technical Writer for AWS OpenSearch, ensured Section 508/WCAG compliance across comprehensive documentation created from scratch for open-source software users. Maintained accessibility standards throughout the content lifecycle—from Markdown authoring in GitHub to publication—adhering to AWS and Linux Foundation guidelines for inclusive developer resources. Led accessible UI copy for the dashboard redesign, revamped the site information architecture to improve screen reader navigation, and established QA processes to ensure technical accuracy and accessibility compliance. Facilitated enterprise-wide writing workshops to elevate accessible communication practices.

Problem

OpenSearch documentation required strict accessibility compliance to serve millions of global developers, including those using assistive technology. The open source project needed scalable processes maintaining WCAG standards across continuous content updates, complex technical information, and diverse user needs. GitHub/Markdown workflow required systematic accessibility integration—proper heading hierarchy, alt text for visual elements, and semantic structure—while keeping a rapid development pace and technical accuracy.

Solutions
